Bolt – A Unity Type Dash For Gnome Shell

May 31, 2012 No Comments »

Are you one of those people who like both Gnome Shell and Unity, but can’t decide which one to stick with? Well, there has been a Gnome Extension released called ‘Bolt’. This extension is basically the Unity Dash for Gnome Shell. It does a lot of what the actual Unity dash does, like storing recent items, changing it’s background colour to suit your background and it has a search field.

There are some differences between the actual Unity Launcher and ‘Bolt’, for example, there are no lenses supported in Bolt. But it is a very good replica for those wanting to merge features of Unity and Gnome Shell together. Unfortunately the Gnome extensions site was down when I wrote this article so I couldn’t install it and make my own screen shot so the one below is courtesy of OMG! Ubuntu!

The extension is still under development and a number of future features that the developers want to add have already been mentioned. Some of these include:

  • Workspace management
  • Improved theme support
  • Integrated search-provider extensions
  • Changing icon sizes
  • Changing “Bolt” text and/or show an icon
  • Drag to resize
