Dropbox Acquires Mailbox
Contents
Dropbox, the competitor of Google Drive and Skydrive announced the acquisition of Mailbox, a mobile app specialising in the management of email on mobile devices. The amount of the transaction according to reliable sources, is estimated at $100 million.
Dropbox announced the acquisitions in a blog post a few days ago, and although it’s not completely clear what they plan to do with Mailbox yet, one thing is for sure – they will be implementing it at some point. Dropbox went on to say within their post:
Dropbox doesn't replace your folders or your hard drive: it makes them better. The same is true with Mailbox. It doesn't replace your email: it makes it better. Whether it's your Dropbox or your Mailbox, we want to find ways to simplify your life.
What is Mailbox?
Mailbox is a mobile app that allows users to quickly and efficiently manage their emails on a gesture basis. So you can easily archive emails off by the swipe of a finger, or you can “snooze” an email for later by the use of another gesture. At the moment Mailbox is in a closed beta testing phase but you can sign up for it on their homepage. With the Dropbox take-over however, who knows how long that will last.
It will be interesting to see what Dropbox come up with using Mailbox as I can’t personally see how Dropbox and Mailbox would fit together (except for the name). Do you have any ideas as to what they might so with Mailbox? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below…
