The Ascend P6 was unveiled on Tuesday in London. Dubbed as the worlds thinnest smartphone, but is smaller always better? Let’s take a look…

Technical specifications

The first thing that strikes the eye is certainly how thin the device is. Because it measures only 6.2 mm, compared with the industry leaders it pulls out of the game against 7.6 mm for the iPhone 5 and 7.9 mm for the Samsung Galaxy S4. The CPU is an in-house made Quad-core (K3V2) clocked at 1.5GHz and powered by 2GB of RAM.

A beautiful “in-cell” LCD 720p display of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. That’s probably one of the components which allows the thinness of the phone. Storage side, 8GB are available and expandable up to 32 GB by the microSD slot. Beyond its phenomenal power, the Ascend P6 also opts for the photo. Surprisingly, we found at the front a backlit 8-megapixel camera with macro support (up to 4 cm), 1080p video recording and a facial recognition system, which is rumoured to be more accurate than the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5. There is also a 5-megapixel camera at the rear, with LED flash. Very strange that Huawei decided to put the better camera at the front – maybe they’re expecting a lot of “selfies”. :-)

Huawei Ascend P6 IConnectivity is expanded by WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and possible 4G and Double-SIM versions are also on the way. The smartphone is not only thin, it is also lightweight, weighing just 120 grams. It runs on Android 4.2.2 and features their own software overlay, Emotion UI. This includes a widget that brings together the most used applications, up to 16 applications on the same page and optimized for saving energy, as well as some new features like panoramic shots.

Huawei Ascend P6 IIHuawei also point out that there are more than 1,000 themes available on the for Emotion UI. Finally, the hull is made of a brushed aluminium alloy, and the finish makes us think about what is done by Apple. The price will be around $535 and $600 and availability is scheduled for July. Three colours will be available, Black, Pink and White.

It seems that Huawei is gradually going to get into the big league … What do you think of the Ascend P6? Do you think it can compete with the industry leaders? Would you give them a chance to prove themselves?
