Linux Mint Mini PC Coming Soon
For those that don’t know, Linux Mint is a popular Ubuntu derivative. I recently wrote a review of their latest release, ‘Linux Mint 13 Maya’. It seems that Clem & Co are dipping their toes into the hardware market, with the imminent release of the ‘Mint Mini PC’ (that’s probably not it’s official name – just one I gave it) as little as a week away.
The ‘Mint Mini PC’ will be based on a piece of hardware that is already available, the ‘Fit PC3′. This device starts at £425 ($589), which I personally think is very pricey given is mediocre system specifications. Which are:
- AMD CPU up to 1.65GHz dual core
- Dual-head Radeon HD graphics
- 4GB of RAM
- 250GB HDD
- 4x USB ports
- Dual-head DisplayPort
- HDMI
- 2 eSATA ports
- Ethernet
- Wi-Fi
Considering I bought an 11″ HP laptop of around a similar spec recently for £300, this really is a high price to pay (in my opinion). These devices are great space savers, but with the reduced power and heavy price tag, you are limited to what you can do. Personally, if I needed the space, and computer were lack of power wasn’t an issue, I would go for a small laptop (like my 11″ HP), an LCD screen and a USB keyboard & mouse. This way you have a desktop computer that you can take anywhere with you…for a lot less money.
I personally don’t think that this will sell all that well as Linux Mint is obviously free use and there is a lot of hardware already out there that is much cheaper. It would be nice if I could be proven wrong though!
What do you guys think? Would you buy one?
