The New HP Slate 21 – The Tablet That Thinks It’s a Computer

HP have announced a new hybrid all-in-one touch screen device that runs Android. The HP Slate 21 is a 21.5″ tablet that is designed to work as a main computer, but can it actually compare to a “normal” computer?
The HP Slate 21 is not unique in terms of it’s design, as there are many similar all-in-one devices out there from a number of manufacturers, but what is different is the fact that this machine runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and not a traditional desktop OS like Windows. So you have to ask yourself, how useful is a 22″ glorified tablet?
Specifications
When I read through the spec sheet for the HP Slate 21, I was actually quite surprised at how low the price is, however, it became clear why it was so cheap when I dug into the details a little. The specs are as follows:
- Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
- NVidia Tegra 4 Quad-Core CPU
- 1GB RAM
- 8GB internal storage (expandable via an SD card slot or USB HDD)
- 21.5″ full HD touch-enabled LED widescreen (1920×1080)
- NVIDIA GeForce GPU with 72 custom cores
- 10/100 Ethernet
- Wireless B/G/N
- Bluetooth 3.0
- HD webcam
This tidy not-so-little package comes in at £349 (around $560). So the price is pretty good, but it does leave me wondering how good the performance will be when you consider the lack of RAM. If this device had 2GB of RAM, then I would have strongly considered buying myself one, but as it is, I can’t really justify £349 for the HP Slate 21 when it seems so under powered in the RAM department.
However, being able to add things like NTFS USB hard drives, keyboard and mouse, and having apps like a file browser and office app by default, it isn’t completely out of the realms of possibility for this device to replace a full blown desktop. That’s all dependant on what you would use your machine for though.
What do you guys think? If the HP Slate 21 a worthy contender as a desktop replacement? Or is it just an over-sized tablet? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.
