Philips Screeneo – A Rather Special Kind Of Video Projector

The title is suggestive! Philips have introduced at the IFA in Berlin, the Philips Screeneo, a video projector, invented and developed by Sagemcom, but sold under the Philips brand. This is a projector of a rather special kind. Let’s take a look…

Screeneo Features

The box is quite compact, with a sober finish, surrounded by a kind of metal mesh that looks quite subdued. The Philips Screeneo uses a technique of short lens video projection (the image is projected vertically, not horizontally as with usual projectors), enabling it to display an image of 100 inches at only 44 cm away from the wall. Note also that only 10 cm from the wall, the projection reached 50 inches.

Philips ScreeneoThis technology is based on an LED lighting system that are less expensive than conventional projector lamps. This system produces a brightness of 700 lumen’s allowing the Screeneo to display both HD and 3D images (thanks to the DLP link glasses included). The dimensions of the device make it somewhat of a nomad device can can be moved at will.

Philips Screeneo 1Technical side, we note that it does not require any specific reflective surface and it includes its own sound system, Dolby Digital 2.1 26 watts, with a woofer. The Philips Screeneo runs a modified version of Android OS and is compatible with Miracast, the wireless content delivery technology. We find Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0, as well as a DLNA chip.

Physical connectors are also available: 2 x HDMI ports, 2 x USB 3.0 ports, VGA, RJ-45 network connector, S/PDIF optical connector and  audio out. So, those who prefer physical media can connect the Screeneo via HDMI, insert an SD card into the card reader, connect a USB flash, or connect the antenna to an antenna jack. A really attractive product, which will be available before Christmas, for a price of around $1,975
