Richard Stallman does not recommend Ubuntu

The founder of the Free Software Foundation has a problem, and it is not the latest version of Windows. No, Richard Stallman is not satisfied with Ubuntu, at the point to discourage Linux users to choose this distribution.

What is wrong with Ubuntu?

According to Stallman, Ubuntu is guilty of indiscretion of its users by incorporating spyware, which according to him, collects search queries and sends them to Amazon. For those that don’t know, this “spyware” is the new Amazon search feature.

Canonical transmits this to search data to Amazon, but anonymously. Unfortunately though it is not enough for Stallman for who Canonical has no more right than Amazon to collect personal data. So for the founder of the FSF (Free Software Foundation), the penalty is excommunication:

If you, like, recommend or distribute GNU / Linux, please remove Ubuntu from the distributions you recommend or distribute [...] Do not install or do not recommend Ubuntu. Instead, tell people to avoid Ubuntu for spying.

Personally I think this point of view is a little strong. What do you guys think? Please let us know in the comment section or come to our forums for a chat.

The guy seems a little bent on the meaning of “spyware” – after all, you can disable this feature. As much as Ubuntu has helped spread Linux, he should at least take that into consideration.

This option of amazon or even the Web Apps can be turned off and even you can uninstall it if you want, like a lot of users like me that uninstall this lens. It’s really stupid to attack an OS that is moving Linux to a new whole level. He can, however, recomend some ideas for the purpose of help Ubuntu to go ahead and do things to promote and make an OS usable for a simple user, and finally take that piece of the cake that GNU/Linux had always deserve.

Ubuntu has to be explicit about user internal options. No more.
