Wordpress backup

WordPress is a fantastic tool that allows us to create brilliant websites with literally just a few clicks. But even though it’s very simple to get started using WordPress, it does take a lot of work maintaining a website. That’s why it is very important to ensure that all that hard work doesn’t go to waste if something goes wrong.

A while back I wrote about how to effectively secure your WordPress site. In this article I used a backup tool called “Online Backup for WordPress” which is a great tool, but since then I’ve found an even better backup solution and me being the kind hearted and quite frankly amazing person that I am, I decided to share this with you folk.

What is UpdraftPlus?

Put simply, UpdraftPlus is a very powerful backup utility for WordPress that not only allows you to generate regular backups of all the data contained in your WordPress site (including your database), but it also allows you to automatically forward these backups on to third parties like Google Drive, Dropbox, an FTP server or simply an email address.

For example, I have UpdraftPlus running a backup of RefuGeeks every night. Once this backup is generated UpdraftPlus will automatically upload the complete backup to my FTP server at home which is then in turn also backed up. So you see, I have backups of my backups! It will also email me a log of the backup daily so I know if my backups are working.

So even if my hosting providers data centre burns to the ground (god forbid as they are awesome) then I can quickly restore RefuGeeks back to it’s former glory even on a new or temporary server. I’ve tested it and a full restore takes around 90 minutes to complete.

The developer of UpdraftPlus, David Anderson actively updates the plugin on a regular basis and he has also helped me when I have had problems via the WordPress forums so you’re definitely not alone when it comes to support.

So if you take the protection of your website seriously, then I can’t recommend UpdraftPlus highly enough. There are links below for more information. If you have decided to start using UpdraftPlus then please consider leaving David a donation using the link below, its the least we can do for such an awesome plugin.

Great plugin. Though setting up with google drive involves too many steps. I have one question. How to use this plugin to mirror my site locally ?

Once you have wordpress setup, you import the database using phpmyadmin, then you copy the other backups (themes, plugins, uploads) to /wp-content

    Hi Kevin

I’m very green at this. I added this plugin to my wordpress blog and clicked backup and I did see some movement. How do I get a dropbox? I see it was an option. I’m not sure where to even look.

    • https://refu-archive.kevquirk.com/ Kev Quirk

There is a dropdown for dropbox in the remote storage section in the admin screen. You should just be able to select Dropbox. However, I’m not sure if all you need to do is login with your dropbox credentials or if you need to set it up with the API. I personally use FTP.

Here is the link to the support forums, the creator of the plugins is very active on there so he should be able to help:

I’m green too. I’ve added Updraftplus to my website, activated it, and clicked on “back up.” Ok, the back up has completed. But where is the backup? How do I find it so I can download it? There is nothing I can see to indicate just exactly where my backup “is” nor is any directory or name of a file given.

Hi Richard, I’ve just answered your question over on the MakeUseOf article you just commented on as they were both written by me. :-)

Anyway, for details of the remote storage options and where the backups are stored by default then take a look at my comment on there. Here is the link:
