Valve Announces The Steam Controller

As mentioned by my friend and elder brother Kev Quirk, in his article on the Steam Living Room, Valve had a few announcements to make. The whole community was expecting Source 2 or Half Life 3.  But Valve shocked us all be announcing SteamOS, and the Steam Machines. And now, we have the Steam  Controller, sporting dual trackpads, intended to complete the package.

Features & Design

A quick look at the Steam Controller, and you can quickly see the difference from other control pads on the market – there’s no multi-directional buttons to control movement. Instead, users will be able to take advantage of two trackpads, a lot like the ones found on a laptop. How well these will work is anyone’s guess, but Valve have confirmed that the Steam Controller will be backwards compatible with all Steam titles.

…The Steam controller is designed to work with all Steam games: past, present and future. Even the older titles can be used with this controller that simulates the presence of a keyboard and a mouse…

Valve assures that the Steam Controller offers a much higher control system, designed to provide maximum accuracy on games. The game pad integrates a total of 16 programmable buttons.

The two circular trackpads are click-able, and in the centre of the pad, there is a touch-screen, who’s function differs depending on the game you’re playing. The device is also equipped with a new force feedback system based on small powerful electromagnets capable of generating a variety of forces and vibrations.

Shut Up & Take My Money!

Not too fast there, unfortunately, no price or availability date have been announced yet. But, as with the Steam Machine, the Steam Controller will be distributed to a select few beta testers. To be in with a chance of becoming one of these very few envied geeks, take a look at the Steam Controller website.
