ZTE Geek – The Brand New Smartphone With Intel Inside
Smartphones are not really the field of Intel. After many attempts, we can remember the Santa Clara in partnership with Orange, the Yolo, the Lenovo K900…and now here is the “Geek“, unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing, and signed by ZTE. Will this device finally be a sucess for Intel?
Hardware Specifications
Running Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), it sports a 5-inch screen. The ZTE Geek is powered by an Intel Atom Z2580 Dual-Core processor (Clover Trail +), clocked at 2GHz and the core is supported by 1 GB of RAM. It is a new CPU, and here are some information about its capabilities, and as a reminder, these two Intel Clover Trail + (Z2580 and Z2460) architectures are engraved in 32nm-based dual-core processors and clocked at 2GHz. They are also accompanied by PowerVRS SGX (544MP2 for Z2580 and 545 for Z2460) graphic chipsets, which also have hyper-treading compatibilities with a maximum speed of 533 MHz.
The screen is capable of displaying a high definition image resolution of 1280 x 720 with a pixel density of 720 ppi. It is resistant to shocks and scratches thanks to the Gorilla Glass technology used.
For the rest, it remains the usual story on the ZTE Geek. The internal memory is about 8GB, expandable up to 32GB through a microSD slot. The connectivity is complete. Including WiFi b/n/g, Bluetooth 4.0, Micro-USB output, and GPS. Note that it is equipped with a XMM 6260 chip, so it is 3 and 4 G compatible, but no information has been released yet about a possible integration of LTE mobile networks.
Two cameras are scheduled. One at the rear, about 8 mega-pixels, and another one at the front about 1.2 mega-pixels. The LED flash will allow you to take pictures in dark situations. Finally, the battery is a lithium-ion one of 2300 mAh.
Software and availability
No sale date has been provided but the ZTE Geek could serve as “proof of concept” for other manufacturers and allow Intel to finally get up to speed in the smartphone market. As said above the device will run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, with the ZTE home overlay.
